Pope Francis, recovering from double bouts of pneumonia, made another unexpected outing on Saturday, going to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major to pray, the Vatican press office announced on Telegram, reports AFP.
Multiple Surprise Outings
The Pope “visited the Basilica of Saint Mary Major early in the afternoon and on the eve of Palm Sunday and Holy Week, he prayed before the icon of the Virgin Mary,” the Vatican said.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who is recovering from his pneumonia, has made a number of surprise outings in recent days.
Francis made an unexpected first appearance on Sunday outside St. Peter’s Basilica to greet the faithful, before receiving a private audience with King Charles III of England and Queen Camilla on Wednesday, although their meeting had initially been canceled.
He also visited St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday to inspect renovation work and pay his respects before the tomb of Pius X, greeting the faithful and restorers along the way.
“The fact that he is convalescing does not mean that he cannot go out,” the Vatican said Friday. Despite the improvement in his health, nothing has yet been decided regarding his participation in the religious ceremonies of Holy Week before Easter, and much will also depend “on the weather.”
